There are few acts more egocentric than writing and performing an autobiographical solo show…and having a baby is arguably one of them. Christen Clifford’s tell-all account of pre-conception, pregnancy and early parenthood—and the effect on her sexual identity—turns out to be remarkably accessible (at least to us fellow mothers).
A charmingly neurotic free spirit who’s always seen the world through “sex-colored glasses,” Clifford watched her role as a vixen wane postpartum while her infatuation with her son waxed. Becoming a mother taught her selflessness, but she struggled to regain her sense of self and sensuality. Although monologuists often speak frankly about their love lives, the subject of sex after birth is still taboo. Polite mommies don’t talk about it, but Clifford describes it in uncomfortably hilarious detail, including the perils of breast-feeding and masturbating simultaneously, the joys of Kegel exercises, and the bizarre threesome of mommy, daddy and baby. Director Julie Kramer keeps the show visceral by having Clifford illustrate her adventures with props (water guns as milk-shooting breasts) while spirited dance sequences choreographed by burlesque queen Julie Atlas Muz showcase the hot mama (currently pregnant with her second child). In a postfeminist world, you’d think a woman could embody both Madonna and whore, but society still doesn’t quite accept the dichotomy. Clifford takes it one step further as Madonna, whore and MILF.
