Canopy Verde
Who's behind it Linda Wong, a 33-year-old who was born in Canada and raised in Taiwan and isn’t a designer by training (she attended business school), though it’s impossible to tell from the look of her impeccable products.
What it is Sophisticated handbags made of organic cotton, chrome-free leather, eco-safe–certified dyes, chemical-free embroidery and wooden hardware. “They have clean lines that are whimsical and feminine,” says Wong.
Her message “I have traditional Chinese parents who never let us waste anything (I used to wear my brothers’ hand-me-downs), so I carried their teachings on to create a green line that doesn’t look cheap or like it’s made of recycled candy wrappers and car tires,” Wong laughs.
What the name means “I wanted a name that was suggestive of my beliefs but didn’t hit you over the head with its greenness,” she explains. She liked the protective connotation of canopy and says the two words together remind her of a rain forest.
Where to buy it The Canopy Verde line is sold in 15 boutiques throughout Boston, New York and Washington, D.C. A few local stores: Verve (353 Bleecker St between W 10th and Charles Sts, 212-691-6516), Destination (32 Little W 12th St between Ninth Ave and Washington St; 212-727-2031, destinationny.net) and Shop (94 Orchard St between Broome and Delancey Sts; 212-375-0304, iloveshop.com).

The owner is not the designer or any designer at all. She hires people to do designs for her. It's a great business model and idea and overall style, but give credit where it is due for the actual design work.
