When people talk about traffic in Washington Square Park, they’re usually referring to pot dealers scamming naive NYU undergrads. But in 1952, Robert Moses proposed extending Fifth Avenue through the famed green space. Jane Jacobs joined local activists and successfully blocked the plan—and got cars banned from Washington Square altogether. To celebrate, the group decorated Stanley Tankel’s station wagon for one final ride through the park.
