Two weeks ago, TONY invited 12 seventh graders from Mott Hall II in Harlem to tour our office and ask questions about the magazine biz. Little did they know, editor Michael Freidson had a few questions of his own—namely, what the heck should we put on the cover of this week’s Dance issue? Here’s what the kids said (and what our art department came up with).
Laura Krstovska-Guerrero, 13, Inwood“Put the Jabbawockeez [season-one winners of MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew] on the cover, with each member doing a different dance move. The background could be disco lights so it looks like they’re in the club!”
Nikolas Rodriguez, 13, Upper West Side“Put a photo of a break-dancer posing on cardboard. If Time Out New York doesn’t think the photo is good, an artist at the magazine can draw a break-dancer doing a move. They can add colors to catch the reader’s eye.”
Ray Milian, 12, Riverdale“There are people dancing in the background, like wallpaper. They have no faces and are genderless and androgynous; they look like mannequins and are not wearing any clothes. In the front, there is a person doing the Running Man.”
Kashawn Johnson, 13, Harlem“I want to see a collage of people doing crazy and wacky dances. Maybe 30 or 50 of them!”
